Average Velocity Calculator

This average velocity calculator is used to find the average velocity to know how fast an object moves on average, considering its starting and ending velocity. Along with that, it can allow us to calculate the initial velocity and final velocity.

Average Velocity Formula:

The formula is derived from the given equation:

Vavg = 1 2 (Vi + Vf)

Where:

  • Va = Average Velocity
  • Vi = Initial Velocity
  • Vf = Final Velocity

Most commonly Vi and Vf are given when it comes to determining the Vavg. If one of them or both are unknown, then use the given formulas to make the calculation.

➥ Initial Velocity Formula:

Vi = 2 Vavg − Vf

➥ Final Velocity Formula:

Vf = 2 Vavg − Vi

How to Calculate the Average Velocity?

An average velocity can easily calculated using the formula: look at the solved example for a better understanding:

Example:

A car traveling at 70 km/h comes to a complete stop in 10 seconds due to applying brakes. So find what is the average velocity of a car.

Solution:

Given Values:

  • Initial Velocity = 70 km/h
  • Final Velocity = 0 km/h
  • Time = 10 seconds

Put the Values into Average Velocity Equation:

Vavg = 1 2 (70 + 0)

Vavg = 70 2

Vavg = 35 km/h

We change the result in the SI unit of average velocity. So,

Vavg = 9.72 m/s

FAQs:

What is average velocity?

Average velocity is a measure of the average rate at which an object changes its position.

Can average velocity be zero?

Yes, the average velocity of the moving body can be zero because if the body returns to its starting point after some time, its displacement will become zero.
