ERA Calculator

Enter the earned runs along with innings pitched to calculate the Earned Run Average (ERA) by using this tool.

If you want to add a partial inning, .4444 is for a fourth of an inning & .8888 is for two fourths, etc.

The ERA calculator calculates the number of innings a pitcher has played. By this tool, the earned run average is determined according to the given value.

What Is ERA In Baseball?

ERA is a baseball metric that is used to determine the efficiency of a pitcher in a more accurate way than a simple win-to-lose ratio. It indicate the average number of earned runs a pitcher will give up per nine-inning game.

  • A lower ERA means the pitcher is well
  • A higher might mean they're having a tough time

Inning Per Sport:

  • Baseball = 9
  • Softball = 7
  • Little league games = 6 or 7
  • Cricket = 1 or 2

ERA Formula:

The earned run average formula is as follow:

ERA = (Earned Runs / Innings Pitched) x Game innings

Each out that is pitched, counts as 1/3 of an inning

Earned Run Average is determined by dividing the total number of earned runs allowed by the number of innings pitched and multiplying by game inning (9). The terms in the baseball era formula;

  • Earned Runs (ER): It indicates a run in baseball that scores without the benefit of an error before the fielding team has had a chance to make the 3rd putout of the inning
  • Innings Pitched (IP): It is a pitching statistic in baseball that measures the number of innings a pitcher remains in a game as there are (3 outs) in an inning, with each out recorded indicates 1/3 of an inning pitched
  • Game Innings: It is the total innings in a game, typically, in baseball, this value is equal to 9 and lower for softball games or little league games. However, the above calculator allows you to change these parameters

How to Calculate ERA in Baseball?

ERA (Earned Run Average) tells the average number of runs a pitcher allows in 9 innings. Let’s take a look at the example below that illustrate the ERA calculation:

Example:

If a pitcher has pitched 96 innings and 1 out, then it has allowed 28 Earned Runs.

Solution:

Put the values in the above pitchers era formula:

ERA = [28 / (96 + 1/3)] * 9

ERA = (28 / 96.333) * 9

ERA = 0.29066 * 9

ERA = 2.6159

FAQ’s:

What is Good ERA in Baseball?

A lower ERA indicates better performance, while an ERA under 2.5 runs in a typical 9 inning game is considered excellent.

Who has the Lowest ERA in MLB?

Tim Keefe

He pitched the lowest single season for a history book. His Earned Run Average, measuring runs allowed 105 innings for National League’s Troy Trojans, was a mind-blowing 0.86! This is over the half a run less than anyone else that year.
