Zakat (or Zakāh) is one of the five pillars of Islam that involves giving a portion of one's wealth to charity.
Zakat Meaning:
"Zakat" is an Arabic word that means "giving to the needy" or "giving to charity".
How does Zakat Work?
Nisab refers to the minimum amount of wealth that obligates a Muslim to pay Zakat.
By Islamic principles, this Zakat Calculator determines your obligatory Zakat payment considering the Nisab threshold.
Prophet Muhammad's (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) teachings provided the foundation for the nissab principles. The Nissab differs depending on the category of wealth, which is established according to the price of gold or silver.
Category | Nisab Threshold | Zakat Rate | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Gold | 87.48 grams (7.5 tolas) | 2.5% | Zakat applies if owned for one lunar year. |
Silver | 612.36 grams (52.5 tolas) | 2.5% | It also applies if owned for one lunar year. |
Cash & Bank Savings | Equivalent to the value of 87.48g gold or 612.36g silver | 2.5% | Includes savings, salary, and business cash flow. |
Business Inventory | Equivalent to the Nisab of gold or silver | 2.5% | Includes goods intended for sale. |
Investment & Stocks | Market value reaching the Nisab threshold | 2.5% | Applies to shares held for trade; dividends may also be considered. |
Rental Income | Equivalent to the Nisab threshold | 2.5% | Zakat applies on saved rental income after expenses. |
Agricultural Produce | 653 kg (approx.) for grains; 5 camel loads for fruits | 5% (irrigated) / 10% (rain-fed) | Zakat is due at harvest time. |
Livestock (Cows, Sheep, Goats, Camels) | Varies by type and count (e.g., 30 cows = 1-year-old calf) | Varies | Minimum numbers: 40 sheep/goats, 30 cows, 5 camels. |
Debts Receivable | If expected to be repaid and meets Nisab | 2.5% | Includes business and personal loans given to others. |
Cryptocurrency | Equivalent to gold/silver Nisab | 2.5% | Based on the market value at the time of Zakat payment. |
It is important to understand that if a person owns only gold, they should use gold Nissab (87.48g OR 7.5 tola). However, mixed assets such as 1 or 2 tola of gold, 10 tola of silver, and 5,000 rupees, should fall in the category of lower silver Nissab (612.36g OR 52.5 tola).
Zakat is calculated based on the value of your net assets. We have divided the process into two categories: Zakatable assets like (gold, silver, cash, savings, and business assets) and deductible liabilities including (any debts and other outgoing amounts). Then, calculate Zakat in 2025, if your net assets are equal to or greater than the nisab threshold.

Zakat is paid when your money has passed the Nissab threshold and it is often paid before Eid al-Fitr prayer at the end of Ramadan.
Zakat ensures the redistribution of wealth and purifies one's wealth by donating a portion to the less fortunate. Muslims also achieve spiritual purification through the act of giving.
Zakat al-Fitr is also referred to as ‘Fitrana’, it is a donation before the Eid al-Fitr prayer at the end of Ramadan. The purpose of Zakat al-Fitr is to enable poor people to celebrate Eid.
Zakat al-Mal is also known as 'Zakat on wealth' or 'alms-giving'. An annual obligation is to give a portion of wealth including cash, gold, silver, and trade goods.
If your wealth meets the Nisab threshold, the Zakat due on $10,000 is $250. This is calculated as 2.5% of $10,000. You can also use the Zakat calculator which considers your net assets and tells you exactly how much you need to give.
Zakat can be given to people and groups who fall into one of eight categories including:
