What is a Window Blind?

A window blind is a shade that is used to cover the whole window. 

It consists of vertical or horizontal slats that are made from wood plastic and metal and you can adjust various curtains. They can be easily opened to let the daylight in through the controller that is available on the left side. 

How to Calculate Standard Window Blind Sizes?

For Inside Mount Blinds:

• Calculate the Width at the middle, top and bottom of the frame from the inner side of the window frame.
• Now you need to calculate the height at the center, left, and right sides from the inner sides as we have done in the case of width.
• Write down all of these measurements on a piece of paper. 
• If you don’t like that your blind touch the bottom of the window sill then utilize the longest length measurement and subtract 1/4th of an inch from it. 

Keep in mind that when you have to install the blind from the inner side of the window then you will have to fit it inside the window frame and when you have to install it from the outer side of the window then you have to install the blind over the frame. 

For Outside Mount Blinds:

Example: Calculating Outside Mount Blinds

Suppose you measured your window and found:

• Longest width of window: \( W_\text{window} \)
• Longest height of window: \( H_\text{window} \)

For an outside mount blind, you need to add extra for overlap:

• Width of blind: \[ W_\text{blind} = W_\text{window} + 3 \text{ inches} \quad (\text{1.5 inches overlap on each side}) \]
• Height of blind: \[ H_\text{blind} = H_\text{window} + 1.5 \text{ inches} \quad (\text{overlap at the top}) \]

Picture Window:

Height: \( H = 12 \text{ to } 96 \text{ inches} \)
Width: \( W = 24 \text{ to } 96 \text{ inches} \)

Slider Window:

Height: \( H = 24 \text{ to } 60 \text{ inches} \)
Width: \( W = 36 \text{ to } 84 \text{ inches} \)

Double-Hung Window:

Height: \( H = 36 \text{ to } 72 \text{ inches} \)
Width: \( W = 36 \text{ to } 84 \text{ inches} \)

Example 1: How Much to Subtract for Inside Mount Blinds

Measure the window width at three points: left, center, and right. Suppose your measurements are: \[ W_\text{left} = 34.6 \text{ in}, \quad W_\text{center} = 34.5 \text{ in}, \quad W_\text{right} = 34.4 \text{ in} \]

Take the narrowest measurement (center in this case) and subtract 1/4 inch if you don’t want the blinds to touch the sill: \[ W_\text{blinds} = 34.5 - 0.25 = 34.25 \text{ inches} \]

Example 2: Blinds Size for a 34.5-Inch Outside Mount Window

For an outside mount, add 3 inches to both width and height to ensure coverage: \[ W_\text{blinds} = 34.5 + 3 = 37.5 \text{ inches} \] A 37-inch blind may also work fine: \[ W_\text{blinds} \approx 37 \text{ inches} \]
