What is Frictional Force?

Friction is a force that resists the sliding or rolling of one object over another. The frictional force depends upon the nature of the sources and the magnitude of the force. The angle of inclination can also be a factor in the production of friction.  The factors affecting friction are:

  • The magnitude of the Force
  • Mass of Objects
  • Nature of Surfaces

How to Find Frictional Force?

Frictional Force Calculation Example

Consider an object of mass \(13 \, \text{kg}\) on an inclined plane at \(30^\circ\). Find the frictional force if the coefficient of friction is \(\mu = 0.2\).

Friction force formula:

$$ F_\text{friction} = \mu \cdot m \cdot g \cdot \cos\theta $$

Given:

  • \( \mu = 0.2 \) (Coefficient of friction)
  • \( m = 13 \, \text{kg} \) (Mass of the object)
  • \( g = 9.81 \, \text{m/s}^2 \) (Acceleration due to gravity)
  • \( \theta = 30^\circ \Rightarrow \cos\theta \approx 0.866 \)

Solution:

Substitute the values into the formula:

$$ F_\text{friction} = 0.2 \cdot 13 \cdot 9.81 \cdot 0.866 $$

$$ F_\text{friction} \approx 22.09 \, \text{N} $$

How to Find the Coefficient of Friction?

The coefficient of friction (\(\mu\)) is the ratio of the resistive frictional force to the normal force acting perpendicular to the object. It can be calculated using the friction force formula.

Suppose the frictional force is \(F = 13 \, \text{N}\) and the normal force is \(N = 13 \, \text{N}\). Find the coefficient of friction.

Formula:

$$ \mu = \frac{F}{N} $$

Given:

  • Frictional Force, \( F = 13 \, \text{N} \)
  • Normal Force, \( N = 13 \, \text{N} \)

Solution:

Substitute the values into the formula:

$$ \mu = \frac{13}{13} $$

$$ \mu = 1 $$

The coefficient of friction is obtained by dividing the frictional force by the normal force. You can calculate the coefficient of friction for various surfaces using a coefficient of friction calculator.

How to Find Normal Force from Friction?

Suppose the coefficient of friction is \( \mu = 0.2 \) and the frictional force is \( F = 13 \, \text{N} \). Find the normal force which acts perpendicular to the actual frictional force.

Formula:

$$ N = \frac{F}{\mu} $$

Given:

  • Frictional Force, \( F = 13 \, \text{N} \)
  • Coefficient of Friction, \( \mu = 0.2 \)

Solution:

Substitute the values:

$$ N = \frac{13}{0.2} $$

$$ N = 65 \, \text{N} $$

The normal frictional force acts perpendicular to the actual frictional force. You can also use a kinetic friction calculator to quickly find the normal force acting on an object.

How to Find the Force of Friction?

Suppose a normal force of \( N = 20 \, \text{N} \) is acting on an object and the coefficient of friction is \( \mu = 0.2 \).

Formula:

$$ F = \mu \cdot N $$

Given:

  • Normal Force, \( N = 13 \, \text{N} \)
  • Coefficient of Friction, \( \mu = 0.2 \)

Solution:

Substitute the values:

$$ F = 0.2 \cdot 13 $$

$$ F = 2.6 \, \text{N} $$

The frictional force is \( F = 2.6 \, \text{N} \) when the normal force is 13 N and the coefficient of friction is 0.2.

FAQs:

What Are The Various Types of Friction:

The common types of friction are:

  • Static Friction
  • Kinetic Friction
  • Rolling Friction
  • Sliding Friction
  • Fluid Friction

What Is the SI Unit of Friction?

The SI unit of friction is Newton and it is equal to 1 kg·m·s⁻².

Why Is the Coefficient of Friction Dimensionless?

The coefficient of friction is dimensionless as it is the ratio of two quantities

What Is the Difference Between Static Friction and Dynamic Friction?

When objects are not moving with respect to each other, it is known as static friction. If surfaces are moving to each other then it is dynamic friction. Our dynamic and static friction calculator enables you to find the friction of various bodies.
