Log Weight Calculator
Recommended by Arborists, the calculator helps you to get accurate weight, volume, and other stack-related calculations for your log/board stock.
The Log Weight Calculator helps you determine the weight of a log based on its species, wood type, and dimensions (length & width). It also calculates the accurate volume of logs, how many logs or boards fit in a stack, and their total weight.
Calculator Usage Instructions:
The calculator provides results for both “Log” and “Board”.
If you select Log:
- Select its species
- Enter the measured diameters & length in designated blanks
- For stack calculations, enter its maximum height & width
If you select Board:
- Again, select the species
- This time, you need to enter board width, thickness, and length
- For stack, the inputs remain the same as the aforementioned
Formula to Calculate Log Weight:
The first step in calculating log weight is the ‘green’ density. If you know this, you can use the following formulas to get accurate weight output:
Assuming the Log Is a Perfect Cylinder:
\( \text{Weight} = \rho_{\text{green}} \times V \)
Where:
- \( \rho_{\text{green}} \) = Green weight of wood log, measured in lbs/ft³
- \( V \) = Log volume in ft³, calculated by:
\( V = \pi \times \left(\frac{\text{Diameter}}{2}\right)^2 \times \text{Length} \)
- \( W \) = Log weight in pounds
Assuming the Log Is a Tapered Cylinder:
\( \text{Weight} = \frac{d_1 + d_2}{2} \times d \times \text{Length} \times \text{Density} \)
- \( d_1 \) = Diameter from the thinner end of the log
- \( d_2 \) = Diameter from the thicker end of the log
How Much Does a Log Weigh?
The weight of the log depends upon four factors that include:
- Log volume
- Moisture content
- Species of wood
- Density
Where a smaller log/board could be of a few pounds, the larger unit can be of several tons. According to the reference provided by the market survey, a freshly-cut log of wood with an average density weight of about 50 lbs/cu ft. but this figure is not the same for every other species. It is dependent on the density of the wood.
This is why the log weight calculator provides you with real-time results based on the custom dimension and species of the log.
Green Log Weight Chart:
Due to the varying green density, the moisture content in every other tree species is not the same. This can be confirmed by the following wood weight chart that provides the green densities of almost all major tree species around the global market:
