What is the Scale Factor?

How to Find a Scale Factor?
To find a scale factor, first find the dimension of the new shape (Scale Size) and then divide it by the dimension of the real shape (Real Size). In this way, you can determine how many times smaller or larger a new shape is as compared to the real one.

Example #1:
What would be the real length of the object with a scale length of 64 cm and a scale factor of 5:1 in inches?
Solution (Step by Step):
The new shape is 5 times larger than the original. So we can write:
Scale factor = 5:1 → \(\frac{5}{1}\)
Scale length = 64 cm → convert to inches: 24.4 in
Real Length = Scale Factor × Scale Length
\(\text{Real Length} = \frac{5}{1} \times 24.4 \text{ in} = 122 \text{ in}\)
Example #2:
If the original object is 15 inches and the scaled version is 5 inches, then the scale factor is:
\(\text{Scale Factor} = \frac{\text{Original Size}}{\text{New Size}} = \frac{15 \text{ in}}{5 \text{ in}} = 3\)
The new shape is 3 times smaller than the original.
