Screen Size Concept - What Is My Screen Size?
“It is the length of the diagonal of a screen and is expressed in units of inches” The size of a screen affects the visual experience. It gives you an idea of how large or small the content will look on a certain screen. When buying an electronic device like a TV, smartphone, or projector, you must have a sound knowledge of screen dimensions. Knowing this value will help you purchase a device that fits best according to your viewing angles and distances.
Viewing Distance:
The following chart shows the optimal distance that you must consider for viewing your TV, home theater etc.
How To Calculate Screen Size?
If your goal is to do calculations by hand, you need to understand the following scenario:
For Flat Screen:
Whenever you calculate the screen size, keep in mind that it depends upon a couple of factors including:
- Aspect ratio (to calculate it, tap aspect ratio calculator)
- Screen Diagonal
- Screen Height
- Screen Width
Calculating screen size manually requires the following steps to understand:
Determine Aspect Ratio:
The aspect ratio is the ratio of the width and height of the screen and can be calculated with the help of the following equation: Aspect Ratio = Width/Height
Screen Diagonal Calculations:
To calculate the diagonal of the screen, simply take a measuring tape and measure the distance from one upper corner of the screen to the opposite lower corner. The mathematical formulas to calculate the screen diagonal are as under: \(Diagonal^{2}=Height^{2}+Width^{2}\) \(\text{Aspect Ratio}=\dfrac{Width}{height}\) \(\ Screen\ Area =\ Width\times Height\) See the following example to calculate the unknown measurements and size of the screen:
Example: Screen Size Calculation
Suppose you want to find the size of a screen having an aspect ratio of 16:9. We will find the unknown screen measurements and the screen area.
Case #1: Diagonal is 3 inches
Step 1: Aspect Ratio (AR) formula:
\[ AR = \frac{\text{Width}}{\text{Height}} \]
Step 2: Express Height in terms of Width:
\[ \text{Height} = \frac{\text{Width}}{AR} = \frac{\text{Width}}{16/9} = \frac{9}{16} \cdot \text{Width} \]
Step 3: Use the diagonal formula:
\[ \text{Diagonal}^2 = \text{Width}^2 + \text{Height}^2 \]
\[ 3^2 = \text{Width}^2 + \left(\frac{9}{16} \text{Width}\right)^2 \]
\[ 9 = \text{Width}^2 + \frac{81}{256} \text{Width}^2 = \frac{337}{256} \text{Width}^2 \]
\[ \text{Width} = \sqrt{\frac{256}{337} \cdot 9} \approx 2.615 \text{ in} \]
Step 4: Calculate Height:
\[ \text{Height} = \frac{9}{16} \cdot 2.615 \approx 1.47 \text{ in} \]
Step 5: Calculate Screen Area:
\[ \text{Area} = \text{Width} \times \text{Height} = 2.615 \times 1.47 \approx 3.85 \ \text{in}^2 \]
Case #2: Only Height is given (Height = 3 in)
Step 1: Width from Aspect Ratio:
\[ \text{Width} = AR \cdot \text{Height} = \frac{16}{9} \cdot 3 \approx 5.33 \text{ in} \]
Step 2: Diagonal:
\[ \text{Diagonal} = \sqrt{\text{Width}^2 + \text{Height}^2} = \sqrt{5.33^2 + 3^2} \approx 6.09 \text{ in} \]
Step 3: Screen Area:
\[ \text{Area} = 5.33 \times 3 \approx 16 \ \text{in}^2 \]
Case #3: Only Width is given (Width = 3 in)
Step 1: Height from Aspect Ratio:
\[ \text{Height} = \frac{\text{Width}}{AR} = \frac{3}{16/9} = \frac{3 \cdot 9}{16} \approx 1.69 \text{ in} \]
Step 2: Diagonal:
\[ \text{Diagonal} = \sqrt{\text{Width}^2 + \text{Height}^2} = \sqrt{3^2 + 1.69^2} \approx 3.45 \text{ in} \]
Step 3: Screen Area:
\[ \text{Area} = 3 \times 1.69 \approx 5.07 \ \text{in}^2 \]
For Curved Screens

For curved screens, the formulas are:
- Height: \[ \text{Height} = \frac{\text{Diagonal}}{\sqrt{AR^2 + 1}} \]
- Width: \[ \text{Width} = AR \times \text{Height} \]
- Screen Area: \[ \text{Area} = \text{Width} \times \text{Height} \]
- Base Depth: \[ \text{Base Depth} = \text{Radius} \times \left(1 - \cos\left(\frac{\text{Width}}{2 \times \text{Radius}}\right)\right) \]
FAQ’s:
What Factors Should I Consider When Choosing The Screen Size?
You should consider the following factors while choosing a screen size:
- Usage
- Resolution
- Screen Size
